SNORING is not always just a normal annoying occurrence. If you are being elbowed by your partner all night long for snoring you may have a problem. It may be a symptom of a serious sleep disorder called sleep apnea.
SLEEP APNEA is a relatively common condition that may be found in people of any age. While asleep, the flow of air through the nose and mouth is restricted. This blockage often occurs repeatedly during the night. If your partner notices that you stop breathing while you sleep you may have sleep apnea.
The result of Sleep Apnea is lower oxygen levels, increased strain on the heart and lungs, elevated blood pressure, impotence, poor quality of sleep and work performance. People who have sleep apnea may be unaware they have it, but may exhibit some of the more common symptoms such as: loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, decreased alertness, headaches, restless sleep, and high blood pressure.
PERIODIC LIMB MOVEMENTS (PLM) is a bothersome sleep disorder which causes leg jerks during sleep. People who suffer from limb movements may not get proper rest and may complain of insomnia or excessive sleepiness. People with PLM's may complain of the following: they feel like they ran a marathon all night long, disturb their partner by kicking them all night, wake up twitching several times a night, wake up tired day after day.
RESTLESS LEG SYNDROM (RLS): is characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs while at rest. A person with RLS may experience an uncomfortable feeling while at rest that is only relieved by moving the legs. This urge to move the legs may be present all day long making it difficult to sit or they may be present only in the late evening.
NARCOLEPSY symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness or tiredness, falling asleep at inappropriate times and muscular weakness brought on by sudden emotional reactions such as being frightened or laughing. Narcoleptics may experience terrifying dreams or hallucinations as they are falling asleep.
INSOMNIA is often characterized as difficulty falling asleep, but this is only one of four symptoms generally associated with insomnia. The others are: waking up too early, not being able to fall back to sleep, frequent awakenings or waking up feeling un-refreshed.
Insomnia can cause problems during the day such as tiredness, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating and irritability. There are many causes of insomnia.
A host of other conditions including nightmares, night terrors, sleep walking, bed wetting, bruxism and sleep talking can lead to medical and social problems.
